Education and Democrats: A Winning Combination!

Last year, tens of thousands of Arizona teachers went on strike to protest their chronically low pay and abysmal school funding. Although the strikes did lead the state’s Republican leadership to grudgingly increase teacher pay, recent reports still find Arizona nearly dead last in teacher pay.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Arizona still ranks 49th in the country in teacher pay, $13,000 below the national median.

Also consider rankings from the Arizona Education Association (AEA). The group grades legislators on an A+ to F scale, indicating how supportive the lawmakers are of legislation that would benefit our public schools and teachers. When the group published its most recent 2017-2018 scorecard, all three LD17 legislators were Republicans and received Fs: State Sen. Yarbrough and Reps. Mesnard and Weninger.

It is no surprise, then, that LD 17 voters in the 2018 election sent the only educator to the State Capitol: Rep. Jennifer Pawlik. But two Republicans were re-elected: Weninger and Mesnard. The latter very narrowly won and is now in the state senate.

While this was an enormous win, Rep. Pawlik cannot single-handedly change education funding in Arizona. She needs our help, just as the state’s public schools and teachers do. So we must re-elect Jennifer Pawlik to the legislature in 2020, making sure that there’s one more Democrat fighting for education.
